Elmwood Green

The green “oasis” bounded by All Souls Avenue, Holland Road andBuchanan Gardens and known locally as Elmwood Green was, until the endof the 19th century, farmland traversed by an avenue of mighty elms, now swept away by the march of progress.

Since the reign of Queen Victoria the Green has been dedicated to lawntennis: the Boer War came and went as did World Wars I and II but, like the Windmill Theatre “We never Closed!” On the contrary, our gates werethrown open wide for the provision of local allotments, thereby helping the Blitz.
