Message from your captain - March 2005

Elmwood Lawn Tennis Club is involved in competitive tennis at all levels. We have juniors teams - under 18s, 16s, 14s and 12s playing in the boys and girls national club leagues. This involves a squad of four players playing a mixture of singles and doubles against other tennis clubs. These squads are driven around for away games by interested and committed parents and the club fully supports all those that get involved in the future of Elmwood.

In The League

We also have men's and women's teams playing in the SLAZENGER MIDDLESEX LEAGUE Competitions. The men have two teams that compete in this competition; the first team plays in Mens Division 7 (NE) and the secondteam plays in Mens Division 9 (NE). The ladies have one team that plays in the Ladies Division 6 (NE). Both competitions involve a squad of 6 players playing doubles matches during the late spring and early summer weekday evenings against clubs in the Brondesbury, High Gate and Finchley areas. Usually, each team will play a 7 or 8 matches (home and away), starting at 6.30pm and finishing whenever the balls cannot not be seen. This is followed by some home made food and reminisces of the winners that could have been! The winner of each division gets promoted and in the past Elmwood has had some good results.

New Players Please!

We will be looking for players to play in these matches. So contact either Rose Rouse or Colin Hurst if you are interested and your names will be passed onto the team captains This year, Martin Wilkinson has agreed to manage the mens 1st team and Barrie Nielsen has agreed to manage the mens 2nd team.

All Year Playing

The tennis does not stop here! The club is always busy on Saturday and Sunday afternoons (2pm onwards) and you can just come along ready to play a game and join in with your fellow members. There are also the evenings when there are members always ready to play, especially Friday which is usually followed after play by a gathering around Court 7 also known as the bar.

Middlesex tournament & League

This last winter we have played in the mixed veterans Middlesex tournament and the Middlesex Winter 'Floodlight' League. No we do not have floodlights, but the tennis has been good all the same playing in the cold winter evenings for away matches and playing during the cold winter Sunday mornings for home matches. Both teams have had some good successes and we look forward to more members wanting to play throughout the summer and winter months.

New captains & trophies

Your new captains will also look to bring the club tournament back to life, with all matches played in a timely fashion so that trophies can be awarded in the year that they have been won. Your ideas to improve the tennis standards and play will always be welcome.

See you all on the court.

Regards,
Colin Hurst
